The prime purpose of massage therapy is to help alleviate the stress and tension that build up in the body’s soft tissue. During physical activity minor injuries and lesions can occur due to overexertion and/or overuse.

Massage therapy is not just for the sports person, anyone can benefit from massage therapy including people in physically demanding jobs and those not quite so obvious activities, (occupational, emotional and postural stress may produce many similar characteristics to traumatic physical injuries).

Massage therapy can aid in the recovery of tension, stiffness and pain by encouraging healing and restoring the effectiveness of the tissues. Above all it helps to prevent those nagging aches that so often get in the way of daily activities whether one is an athlete, ardent keep fitter or a recreational rambler.

The primary technique used in massage therapy is Deep tissue manipulation. This technique focuses on specific areas of the superficial and deeper layers of soft and muscular tissue. It aims to release the chronic patterns of stress and tension in the body by helping to break up and eliminate scar tissue.

Application is either; slow with strokes applied with deep pressure or rapid using moderate to light pressure, following or going across the connective fibres of the muscle, tendons and ligaments around the affected area. The techniques are often used in combination with other massage procedures such as passive manipulation, active range of movement exercises or acupuncture.
